One of the mistakes that many start-ups make is they do not realize they are not building their business on solid ground. Why? Mainly because they do not have all of the information they need to see that the ground below is nothing but sand.
Ok, I will step away from the engineering ramble and put it more into start-up logic. When you are starting up a new business you are taught to make sure you have finances, competition information, marketing, etc. set up properly. While all of this is critical to your business, so is technology an area that often overlooked.
Having a proper technology infrastructure is critical to business in these times. Having a poorly conceived infrastructure is like building a house on sand. It may look good on day one, but you will end up spending more money and not getting much in return. Eventually it can cause your business to fail.
So many times I see businesses put money and thought into so many areas of their business and not focus on the very infrastructure that will support them. While the technical infrastructure varies by great degree from business to business, it should always be designed and built purposely for your business and done properly.
You either spend the time, effort, and money up front or risk spending much more of each down the road. Most businesses overlook the technology side up front, because they are worried about the cost and want to focus their budget elsewhere. What they need to understand that a proper plan can alleviate much of the upfront cost and instead grow as the company grows.
The important thing is to have the plan, the foundation for your business.
