I was reading an article on Network World about a poll done with IT professionals and their preferences and plans for moving parts of their data centers to a share resource like the cloud. To be honest this does not really surprise me in any way. If you read my article on Cloud Recovery, you know that I feel that moving to the Cloud involves a lot of re-thinking and planning.
Private Clouds offer more of a safety blanket for those who do not want to hand over 100% of the data center to the Public Cloud, which is understandable and probably a good way of thinking. While the Public Cloud has great price points and capabilities, there is an inherent mistrust.
Putting servers that were once private into a public space concerns many. A Private Cloud gives many of the same benefits as the public, but with added control and a better sense of security. You do tend to lose access to additional shared resources as you are now limited to your Private Cloud and do not get to sprawl across the entire Cloud infrastructure of a given vendor. However the tradeoff is you control what is on your Cloud.
Here are some raw numbers from the Network World poll:
Public vs Private
- 7% say they'd most likely use Public Cloud services
- 47% say they'd most likely use Private Cloud as their first pick
- 8% say they are not considering Cloud
Concerns
- 41% Security
- 40% Cost
- 26% Privacy / Compliance
Savings
- Respondents saying they are currently saving 18%, with a projected savings of 22% in two years, and 31% in five.
This is a good article to read for those looking for evidence of where your fellow IT brethren are going. The Cloud is here and while I was reluctant at first, the education and growth is now getting there. It will continue to evolve into the "next" IT.
